On June 5, join SSC as we explore beautiful Stone Mountain in the Rothrock State Forest. Join us for a fun day hike on the Standing Stone Trail in Huntingdon County. The hike is approximately 4 miles, and includes a steady uphill at the beginning, but then levels off on the ridge, with a gentle downhill near the end. The hike will take us past the Three Sisters’ rock formations (known for boulder climbing), Hunter’s Rock and some beautiful vistas. The pace will be steady but leisurely. (There will be several opportunities for those wanting to take photos, eat a snack or catch their breath.) When we return to the trailhead, we’ll carpool up to the top of Stone Mountain to enjoy the incredible 360 degree view from the Stone Mountain Hawk Watch Platform, and eat a late lunch. For those wanting to hike a little longer (two more miles), Willie’s Window is about one mile past the Hawk Watch Platform, and includes some terrific stonework and Sausser’s Stone Pile.
Please bring water, a bag lunch/snack, insect repellent and sunscreen. Long pants are recommended due to ticks. Friendly, well-behaved dogs are welcome to join and are not required to be on a leash.
Due to limited parking at the trail, we’ll meet at the Stone Valley Community Charter School (Huntingdon) and carpool to the trailhead on Frew Road. There is very limited cell service in the McAlevy area, so if you have questions on status of the hike (due to inclement weather) or the directions, please call or text Lisa (814-404-7312) before 9:00 AM.
