PRESIDENT'S CORNER

I hope all of you had a great winter and lots of fun on the slopes! As I write this first message as your incoming president, I am preparing to leave with a group of SSC members for the Dolomites in northern Italy, my first ever ski trip to Europe. I sure have come a very long way since my first SSC trip 40 years ago to Heavenly Valley at southern Lake Tahoe.

I had never been on an airplane before that trip, I could barely ski the easy slopes at Roundtop and I was afraid of heights! The only three people I knew who skied at that time talked my late husband Maynard and me into going on a trip with a club we had never heard of. He was also a beginning skier, but fearless, so I was determined to follow him through all kinds of terrain we shouldn't have been on. There were lift chairs blowing in the wind without safety bars, so I quickly learned to take an end seat, which I still do to this day. The charter flight for about 200 people was led by the late great George Hannon whom I didn't know at the time, but found out years later in conversations with him. I never looked back – skiing was something fun to do in the winter when most people I know are complaining about the weather.

My son Steven grew up traveling with me on club trips around North America and quickly became an expert skier. George recruited him for National Ski Patrol, where he joined other SSC members rescuing skiers and boarders in need of help on the local slopes. I have come a long way since those early days. This will be my third term as president of this amazing club; I have served on the board of directors’ countless times and led many ski trips through the years. I have made a lot of friends and visited a lot of fabulous destinations I would not have been privileged to experience otherwise. I am excited to meet more of our members both on and off the slopes.

Third time's a charm, some people say, so let's fast forward to the 2024-25 term. Your past-president Becky Havice has been extremely busy getting the contracts in order for next winter's ski destinations. Please see the trip list elsewhere in this newsletter and mark your calendar for the big reveal in May. As is our tradition, the new leaders for our upcoming ski trips will be introduced at the spring banquet. Please make plans to join me at our 60th anniversary banquet on April 27 at Duke's Riverside. It's sure to be a good time!

Please invite your family and friends to join this all-seasons travel and social club. We try to offer social activities throughout the warmer months that appeal to our members and I encourage you to step up and host an event. Please reach out to our current board members with your ideas.

Happy Trails, Stay Safe, (((
